Les colères de la Chine


China is engaged in a war of words with France United States, Australia, Germany, Japan and Mexico for three different reasons.

It fuming over a decision by the Paris City Council to give honorary citizenship to the Dalai Lama next month.
China has earlier tongue lashed leaders of the United States, Australia and Germany for meeting the Tibetan leader and giving him special honours. It regards the Dalai Lama as a separatist out to divide China by creating an independent Tibet.
Beijing is also unhappy about a recent statement by Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso about China's nuclear capability. "China's defense spending has increased by a double-digit rate year-on-year for the last 20 years consecutively, yet the content is lacking in transparency," Aso said. "In addition, China has been proceeding with the modernization of its nuclear arms," he said.

China has earned the ire of the Mexican government for taking quarantine measures against several Mexican citizens after a Mexican traveller came down with swine flu in Hong Kong. The Mexican government said 70 of its citizens were quarantined in hotels and hospitals in mainland China although most of them showed no signs of fever. It sent a chartered plane to pick up Mexican citizens from several cities of China.
